I’ve been thinking a lot about this… what is my individual recipe for success? There must be one for everyone right? And just like spaghetti sauce, no two recipes are the same.
I can’t say I know for certain what my recipe is because I wouldn’t say that I feel like I am I successful at this particular point in my life. At different points in my life, I may have said that I had achieved it. Funny how that is… I’m sure some day (hopefully soon), I will “feel successful” again. It will be at a point in my life when all the following ingredients have been blended together with the right portion of each (without being an exact science… no measuring cups required!).
Living in a foreign country has been an amazing test of character and also has allowed a lot of self-reflection. During this time, I’ve realized how important these things are to me at this point in my life:
1) A stable home. A place where I have my belongings, however few. Where I can let go, unwind, and feel safe. Safe from the boogie man, an intruder, mosquitoes, and excess HEAT!
2) A sense of purpose. Something that makes me want to wake up every day because I know that I’m needed and I love what I’m doing. The two factors together is key!
3) The happiness of my partner. Because if I am content and he is not, then that’s not really being successful is it?
4) Living somewhere that feeds my soul. Where there is culture, and beauty, and atmosphere. Where I can enjoy the company of good people, and quality conversations.
5) Meaningful friendships… a support system, a community!
6) Income that supports my lifestyle. That pays for my home (#1), allows me to live in a country or place that feeds my soul (#4), and enjoy the company of good people (#5) over good food and wine … Could be home cooked, doesn’t have to be fancy!
7) And lastly, having a family in fitness. I love exercise. More than I realized. But what I love most about it is the sense of community. A space where we hold each other accountable and cheer each other on to help one another live a healthier life. Maybe why I choose to be with my personal trainer!! 🙂 Without exercise, and the endorphins and self confidence that comes with it, I can’t imagine feeling like I was in a good place.
